New Series: Currently Digging // October Edition

1) Voluspa Baltic Amber Candle

My pre school’s booster club bought me this candle for my birthday and I could not be more obsessed with the scent! Amber is so perfect for this fall time of year and even though Texas is severely lacking in Fall weather (hello 98 degree days!) this candle makes me feel very cozy. I have been finding myself looking forward to lighting this bad boy on my way home from work every day.

2) Jelly Belly Candy Corn

Anyone who has known me for 30 seconds knows how much I am obsessed with Halloween. The only exception this year is that I am a vegan now, so lots of old favorites are off limits now, i.e. candy corn and milk chocolate. The exception here is Jelly Belly brand candy corn. I had no idea that Jelly Belly makes candy corn that is dairy and gelatin free as well as kosher (for those who are interested). Is it too early to have eaten two bags of this deliciousness?

3) Rocky Horror Picture Show at Alamo Drafthouse

For those who have never been, Alamo Drafthouse is a super cool movie joint where you can enjoy dinner and a movie simultaneously. In true Halloween tradition, this month they are doing a Rocky Horror Picture Show showing and I couldn’t be more excited. This is one of my favorite Halloween traditions and I haven’t gotten to go for quite some time.

4) Cazadores Tequila

The other day we got the good news that our home inspection went swimmingly and A suggested that we buy some tequila to celebrate. Cazadores was on sale and we hadn’t had this stuff in quite sometime so we opted for it as well as some grapefruit juice and coconut liquor. I was pleasantly surprised that Cazadores was even better than I remembered. I think we will be keeping this one stocked in the bar cart from now on!

5) Rainbow Charging Station

Ok, bear with me on this one. I know that this is from PB teen and looks childish, but I swear it is cool…or maybe it is not. But who cares, I love it. I am the absolute WORST at losing my phone. I often wake up before my alarm and realize that my phone is nowhere in sight. Having this little charging station on my bedside table is the perfect (and adorable) way to ensure that I know where my phone is at all times. Oh and that it is charged…because 80% of the time when I have my phone, it is dead.

6) Austin True Food Kitchen

As a vegan in Texas, it can sometimes be hard to find places to eat with friends. There are lots of vegan restaurants, but not a lot that also serve meat options for the non vegheads. Austin True Food Kitchen is ah-mazing for that reason and has the atmosphere of a more upscale restaurant, which can be hard to find. This place is chock full of kick a** vegan entrees as well as sustainably sourced and grass fed meats.

7) Audible

I know I am super late to the game here, but Audible totally rocks. I downloaded it so I could listen to books on tape to get myself through the 18 hour drive from Columbus to Austin and man was it a lifesaver! Every month you get a credit towards a new book and it is certainly addictive. I like to listen to them when I am stuck in traffic, cleaning the apartment or going on a run. So far my favorite reads (listens?) are The Girl on the  Train (hoping to catch the movie ASAP) and The Screwtape Letters (an old classic).

8) Felix the Cat Clock

I know it is kitschy and dumb, but I don’t care. This Felix the cat clock is such a classic that I think it adds just a touch of whimsy to our kitchen. I love the vintage and fun vibe that it puts out and I weirdly love hearing the rhythmic ticking while I am cooking.

9) Welcome to Night Vale

This is a really strange semi-monthly podcast that I have just started and been entranced by. The premise is that this is a newscast covering the happenings in a little town called Night Vale where loads of strange things happen, but no one finds them out of the ordinary. It is a little spooky and a lot funny which makes it great to listen to on my commute (sometimes I hope for traffic just to keep the podcast going!).

10) Is It Vegan? App

This is a fun little nugget that I have been happily exploring lately. This app using your phone’s camera as a barcode scanner that allows you to scan an item and determine immediately if it is vegan or not. It even gives you the unclassified list of ingredients (not just what you read on the bag) and a synopsis of the company’s ethics. I also recently found out that they donate 25% of their ad revenue to animal rights organizations, which is totally rad.

Do you have any current obsessions you would like to share?
