My Road Trip Necessities

When you are planning a road trip, as fun as you know it will be, the idea of being stuck in a car with people, or even by yourself, for hours on end can seem incredibly daunting. A and I are going to be trekking to a few relatively far away places in the upcoming months (Toronto, Chicago and Washington D.C. among others) and I thought it was about time to get prepared for whenever adventure may strike!

I don’t know about you, but I am not a huge fan of packing and unpacking especially when I am traveling a lot! That is why I finally decided to just keep a road trip kit on hand so that we can be ready to go at a moment’s notice (like we weren’t when we decided to randomly go to Cincinnati one weekend) Everything in the kit is just sitting in there all the time (except for the snack box obviously, but I typically keep these pre made in the fridge for work because I eat like a toddler).

1.  Eye Mask: Since my husband is a very pleasant and patient man (and I am a huge whiny baby) he typically does all of the driving on our travels. It’s not that I am always fast asleep when A is driving, but when we take turns it is nice to give one another a break (especially on long haul drives). An eye mask makes it simple to fall asleep and makes the drive seem much more relaxing.
2. Backpack: Nothing works better for storing all of you bits and bobs than a durable, cotton backpack like this one from bblackbox. I have used this bag in a few other posts because it is one of my absolute favorites and I can’t get enough of it! And don’t forget that the proceeds go to a great cause 🙂 Be sure to use the offer code somethingSWELL16 for 15% off your purchase!
3. Water Bottle: I ALWAYS have a Klean Kanteen full of water on hand because it is so important to stay hydrated for your hair, skin and general well being! Plus you never know when you will be stuck in a traffic jam in Indiana for 5 hours….not that I speaking from personal experience.

 4. Snack Box: It is so important to keep snacks in the car to keep me from getting hangry (it gets really bad). I like to pack a variety pack like the one above, with fruits, veggies, chocolate and some source of protein. I also carry some Larabars (the chocolate coconut chew is my favorite and it is vegan!) in my purse at all times for just such emergencies.

5. Light Sweatshirt: I am always cold. Like, always. A on the other hand, is all over the place (I call him both a baby for cold and hot weather daily) so when in doubt I carry an extra layer in case he is having hot flashes and I am freezing with the AC on.

6. Book or Audiobook: I am one of those people who always gets sick when I try to read in cars so I either listen to podcasts or audiobooks on long haul trips. Also a great music playlist can do the trip, but it doesn’t seem to pass the time as quickly as a marathon of “Mystery Show” can. This book, “How To Be a Woman” by the hilarious Caitlin Moran, is the latest from Emma Watson’s book club “Our Shared Shelf” which I joined in January. It is a magical feminist experience and everyone should join it.

7. Car Charger: Because I don’t know about you, but I never charge my phone when I should and having die in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming is not fun.

8. In Car Activity: A and I got really addicted to playing each other in a game called Trivia Crack and it is a serious blast. When we play in the car we don’t compete against each other (since one of us is driving and I don’t want to die) but I just hold both phones and ask the questions out loud. It seems kind of silly but it is fun to interact and try to think of the answers together.

9. Emergency Kit: I am basically a boy scout (always be prepared) and I have this emergency bag on hand at all times.

Those are such great ideas! I ALWAYS forget cash for toll booths and I may or may not have some outstanding toll tickets in New York…and Pennsylvania haha
